At the bottom of this guide, we’ll also go over how to buy fresh, tasty, high-quality pickled sausages while also saving money.
About Pickled Sausages
So what exactly is a pickled sausage? Well, pickled sausages are made with a range of meat ingredients, spices, and flavors. Then, they are preserved through a pickling or brining process. Pickling preserves and extends the shelf life of foods.
How Pickling works
Pickling works by affecting the anaerobic fermentation of a food item with vinegar or brine. Brine solutions help preserve foods and keep them fresh. Even though the pickling process will impact the flavor of food, the right combination of spices will actually enhance the taste of sausages.
The Ingredients of Pickled Sausages
In pickled sausages, the main ingredients are usually chicken, beef, or pork. From there, the sausages are flavored with seasonings like black pepper, garlic, cloves, red chilies, jalapenos, herbs, or cumin. Also, these sausages often contain salts and lipids that make them extra savory.
Health Benefits of Pickled Sausages
Surprisingly, pickled meats are pretty good for your health. In many cases, pickled sausages are preserved with a type of fermented brine or vinegar. These solutions usually contain many beneficial forms of bacteria known as probiotics.
Since the human gut contains a range of natural bacteria and flora, adding to that internal probiotic cocktail can keep your bodily systems in better health. Therefore, pickled foods aid in digestion. These snacks are kind of like the meat form of Kombucha!
Furthermore, pickled meats are often rich in vitamins like vitamin K, and vitamin A. Plus, pickled sausages are loaded with protein. Since protein gives you a potent energy boost, pickled sausages make a great snack when you’re on the move!
Versatility and Tasty Pickled Sausage Uses
Pickled sausages also have a range of uses. Apart from serving as a great snack, they can be added to many other foods. Pickled sausages can be used to enhance rice, beans, cheese trays, casseroles, and especially jambalaya!

Are the pickled sausage available in Canada?
Sorry for the really late reply, sometimes these comments get buried under so much spam. Unfortunately, we don’t ship internationally right now, but we are looking into shipping to Canada in the near future.
Will Penrose ever make their great pickled sausage? Any time I could find them I bought them. To me that was the greatest sausage ever made. I heard they quit making them because of a fire that destroyed the facility that made the jars the sausage was packed in. Rebuild, start production now. I know I am not the only person that LOVES them. Thank you, Bobby Allen Cusseta, Georgia.
